Formulation and evaluation of herbal hair oil

ABSTRACT 

There is a considerable amount of attention being given to herbal formulation nowadays due to a better activity and a lower or zero side effects when compared to the synthetic formulations available in the market. The objective of the present study involves the preparation of a herbal oil using coconut oil, olive oil and Tulsi extract and its effect on hair follicle and its antimicrobial activity. The preparation was also subjected to various tests for analysis including moisture content, total ash, acid insoluble ash, water soluble ash, water insoluble ash and sulphated ash.

Other physical tests were also conducted like viscosity, surface tension, pH, acid value, etc. and were compared with some synthetic marketed formulations. The herbal hair oil prepared is on par with the marketed ones in quality and in some cases showing better activity and tolerance. Synthetic preservatives were found to be used in many of the marketed formulations which may lead to adverse reactions like hypersensitivity, but our preparation contains no such synthetic preservatives and utilizes the natural antimicrobial activity of herbs for the extension of shelf life.

INTRODUCTION

Hair oils are those preparations compiled for hair care and may aid in the prevention and treatment of baldness and or other hair related ailments. Coconut oil has used since time immemorial to promote the luxurious growth of hair. Olive oil is such another oil used to enhance hair growth by improving its overall health as it has been found to condition, moisturize and even prevent DTH (dihydrotestosterone) production to large extent. But such oils if not used properly, they may lead to fatty acid deposition in the scalp and increase comodogenicity, especially in the facial area, which may lead to bacterial growth which is one of the main reasons for blackheads and other undesirable formations. Tulsi has been shown to possess excellent anti-bacterial properties. This study involves the preparation of a hair oil to increase hair growth at the same time maintain germicidal properties. The bactericidal property is also applied to displace the need of any synthetic preservatives1-6.

Material and METHODS

Preparation: The hair oil was prepared by mixing a definite ratio of coconut oil and olive oil. It was also fortified with Vitamin E. Tulsi (Ocimum sanctum) extract was supplemented to enhance antimicrobial activity. The formulation was tested for its physicochemical properties and the results are displayed. 10ml of coconut oil was dissolved in 20 ml of olive oil and heated till dissolved completely. The resulting solution was stirred continuously for 15 minutes. 5 ml of Vitamin E was mixed well with it. Jasmine and rose perfumes were also added for a better aromatic appeal. The resulting mixture was further stirred for another 5 minutes7-10.

*The fungus mentioned in Aspergillus niger and the E. coli is the bacterium used.

RESULTS & DISCUSSIONS

The pH and Acid value of the prepared formulation was found to be similar to the marketed preparations. The viscosity and density was also found to be satisfactory for use.

As shown, the hair oil possessed sufficient antibacterial and anti-fungal properties, which increases its potential to combat seborrhea and acne.

CONCLUSION

The herbal oil prepared was found to be a safe product with its pH being in normal range. Acid value was also found to be satisfactory. The antimicrobial properties was sufficiently exhibited. The formulated product was devoid of any potentially irritant synthetic substances like parabens as it consisted entirely of natural substances. Thus the formulation was superior to the marketed brands due to itsof non-irritancy, safety and due to the complete absence of any artificial ingredients.
